Resolution
Adopted by the RLC Executive Committee
October 1999
WHEREAS the war on drugs has been a failure, with
increasing use of illegal drugs by our youth,
increasing violence associated with illegal drug
trafficking, increasing compromises of our Bill of
Rights, and the undermining of democracy in several
Latin American countries;
WHEREAS it is now undeniable that (leaf form)
marijuana has medicinal value, and citizen
initiatives demonstrate overwhelming support for
legalizing medical marijuana;
WHEREAS only we in the Republican Party, who
advocate individual freedom and personal
responsibility, can provide the nation with the
leadership that will be necessary to adopt a new
approach to the problem of drug abuse;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the National Committee
of the Republican Liberty Caucus applauds Governor
Gary Johnson of New Mexico for his forthright and
principled position on drug policy.
